We mark the progress of our lives by marking milestones - birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Less often, we remember and celebrate the moments that make up those milestones.

This is for those moments.

A Happy Little Vegemite

Katherine truly is a Vegemite kid! None of this fancy new stuff with cheese and butter for her - she loves the full-strength, high-octane version straight from the jar. On a knife. A combination that makes me shudder. Now, don't get me wrong - I love Vegemite too, just not that much, and not without a nice piece of bread or some crackers. And definitely not off the knife!

And just how does a three-year old discover this "pleasure"?

Daddy.

The same person who first gave her the peanut butter jar and a spoon to keep her quiet while got her lunch ready. Daddy, who also likes his vegemite thick. Daddy, who likes Vegemite and peanut paste sandwiches; that is, both in the same sandwich. And yes, Katherine likes them too.

Making lunch together on Saturdays is becoming a bit of a ritual. A typical conversation goes:
Daddy: “Do you want a vegemite sandwich?”
Katherine: “No, don’t want ‘Begemite’!”
Daddy: “Do you want salami and olives?”
Katherine: “No, don’t want salami and ‘olibs’!”
Daddy: “Well, what do you want?”
Katherine: “I want cheese and salami and ‘olibs’ and ‘Begemite’ on a 'samich'!”
Daddy: Silent glare
Katherine: “Please.”

Cousins

Three little girls and a music box.
Katherine, Bethany and Rhianna.
Cousins quietly come together on
Christmas Eve 2008.
Before this moment, the room was filled with the mayhem and noise that comes with ten children opening their Christmas presents. This was after a visit to the Christmas lights display in the street, complete with bubbles, music, animatronics and fireworks. A lot of noise, a lot of excitement, a lot of energy to burn. It was nothing like the traditional "Night Before Christmas".
That three energetic children can be quieted by something as simple as a music box is one of life's delights.
